ITINERARY FOR JULY 2009 KUNTU VILLAGE, KVNC-USA PROJECT SITE VISIT DAY 1: WEDNESDAY JULY 1, 2009 Depart JFK Airport via overnight Delta Airlines flight DAY 2: THURSDAY JULY 2, 2009 Arrive at Accra Airport; meet, assist and transfer to your hotel. Breakfast on arrival Afternoon free for rest and relaxation. Evening Orientation and Welcome Dinner After Dinner meet the Tailors and dressmakers featuring casual wear and formal garments made from local fabrics and textile will visit your hotel. You may purchase ready-made clothes or place an order for a custom- made outfit. Overnight: Novotel Hotel (4-star) B/D DAY 3: FRIDAY JULY 3, 2009 Breakfast City tour of Accra visiting the Kwame Nkrumah (first president of Ghana; graduate of Lincoln University and University of Pennsylvania) Mausoleum and Park, National Museum and W.E.B. DuBois (co-founder of NAACP) grave-site and Centre for Pan Africanism. Drive past Independence Arch and Black Star Square. See Christiansborg Castle, home of the President of Ghana. Lunch at a Ghanaian restaurant After lunch, visit the sprawling University of Ghana in Legon. Of interest are the University bookshop and the Institute of African Studies. You may purchase some Afrocentric materials. Your last stop for the day will be a visit to the Arts and Crafts market where you may try out your bargaining skills on the local vendors (friendly bargaining is part of the African culture) and “shop till you drop”. Return to your hotel by evening Overnight: Novotel Hotel (4-star) B/L DAY 4: SATURDAY JULY 4, 2009 Breakfast Depart Accra for Kuntu in the Central Region. Meet and interact with the chief and people. Spend the day in the village observing KVNC-USA projects. We will perform a community service project (current plan is to build a children's play yard). Continue to Elmina and check in to your hotel. Dinner Overnight: Coconut Grove Beach Resort / Elmina Beach Resort B/D DAY 5: SUNDAY JULY 5, 2009 Breakfast Depart for Church service at Kuntu Methodist Church and farewell to villagers. Afternoon visit Kakum National Park. Go on a one hour walking tour through one of the remaining vestiges of the Rainforest. For the young at heart, experience the exciting Canopy Walk with a panoramic view of the flora and fauna of the rainforest Return to your hotel and have rest of evening free for relaxation. Dinner at your hotel Overnight: Coconut Grove Beach Resort / Elmina Beach Resort B/D DAY 6: MONDAY JULY 6, 2009 Breakfast Depart after breakfast to visit the Cape Coast Castle and the West African Historical Museum. The guide will conduct you to the slave quarters and Negotiation Hall where our ancestors were bargained for and sold. African-Americans will be able to pay a solemn homage to their ancestors. Continue to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. Stop enroute at Assin Manso, burial site of the remains of two former slaves exhumed from New York’s Wall Street and re-interred on Emancipation Day 1998 and the “Slave River” which was the last rest stop for slaves on their “one-way” trek to the Coast for shipment into slavery. Note the change in vegetation from coastal shrub to forest as we drive northwards across the River Prah. Arrive in Kumasi and check in to your hotel Dinner Overnight: Miklin Hotel / Royal Basin Resort B/D DAY 7: TUESDAY JULY 7, 2009 Breakfast Depart on a city tour of Kumasi visiting Manhyia Palace Museum, National Cultural Centre, Prempeh II Jubilee Museum. Drive past the School of Art of the University of Science and Technology and sculpture garden and the Kumasi central market for shopping. Lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch visit to a few Ashanti craft villages to observe craftsmen at work and to purchase souvenir gift items from the wide assortment of handicrafts on sale. Ahwiaa- specializing in wood carvings such as Ashanti stools, walking sticks and fertility dolls; Ntonso where the primary activity is the Adinkra mourning cloth and tie-and-dye and finally to Bonwire, home of the famous Kente cloth. Return to your hotel Rest of day free. Overnight: Miklin Hotel / Royal Basin Resort B/L DAY 8: WEDNESDAY JULY 8, 2009 Breakfast Depart Kumasi to Accra after breakfast. Drive past several scenic villages and charming towns and through the lush vegetation. Arrive in Accra by late afternoon and check in to your hotel. Farewell Dinner with entertainment in Ghanaian Home.
