Kuntu Government and Leadership Like United States, Ghana is a democracy but blended with African cultures and traditions. Locally, villages are still governed by tribal chiefs. Even moderate sized towns, such as Saltpond, are a merger of villages with their own village chiefs. The chief of a village is responsible for the welfare of the citizens of the village but he (or she!) does not govern alone. Nana Brebo and Nana Montoa are assisted by a village council of sub-chiefs and elders who represent the different families or clans in Kuntu. In addition to the chiefs and elders, Kuntu has an at-large elected Unit Development Committee that helps determine village priorities, primarily for government initiatives.
