Kuntu Nkosohen Scholar Program

Free public education in Ghana ends at Junior Secondary School, now Junior High School or JHS.  Kuntu JHS opened in 2002 and when the first class graduated in 2005, 6 students passed the government exam to attend senior high school (SHS).  SHS in Ghana is not free public education.  The fees may exceed $450 per year which is more than Kuntu parents who may only earn about $1/day can afford.  The Kuntu Nkosohen Scholar program provided scholarships for these 6 students to attend Senior High School.  In 2006, an organization of professional African American women, the Bucks County chapter of Links, Inc., helped by providing SHS scholarships for successful 2006 graduates of Kuntu JHS.

The success of the Nkosohen scholar program has motivated more students to study hard in JHS to pass the government exam for SHS.  To insure that all student fees are paid, KVNC-USA pays the SHS student fees at the beginning of each school term (SHS school year is divided into 3 terms) and then seeks sponsors who will make a tax-deductible donation to KVNC-USA for the full year SHS fees.  WE DESPERATELY NEED HELP.  MORE INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS ARE NEEDED TO SPONSOR  NKOSOHEN SCHOLARS TO ATTEND HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND.  Click here to help or contact us at info@ghanavillage.org for more information.

In May 2008, the first class of 6 Nkosohen scholars graduated SHS.  This was a major development for Kuntu.  Never had 6 Kuntu youth completed high school in one year.  Every graduate was the first in their families to complete senior high school.  In September of that year, when the president of KVNC-USA came to Kuntu, he sponsored a reception for the graduates at the Kuntu Methodist Church.  It was a happy occasion for the entire village.  Each student was given a certificate and a GHc50 (50 Ghana cedi = $35 USD) appreciation award.  The class of graduates asked if KVNC-USA would start a student teacher program so that they could do something to give-back to their village.  Unfortunately, KVNC-USA could fund neither a student teacher program or any post-high school education at the time.

As of September 2009, sixteen (16) Nkosohen scholars have completed high school and there are twenty (20) scholars in SHS with all school fees paid by Kuntu Village Nkosohen Committee-USA sponsors.  The Nkosohen scholar graduates follow next or you can click here to go directly to the current enrolled Nkosohen scholars and their sponsors.

2009 Kuntu Nkosohen Scholar Graduates

In May 2009, the 2006 class of Nkosohen scholars finished high school.  In addition to  8 Kuntu JHS graduates, KVNC-USA also sponsored 4 additional students who were related to Kuntu (in Ghana, nieces and nephews are considered same as sons and daughters).  These students had started SHS earlier but would have had to dropout because of family financial hardships.   KVNC-USA gave each student a certificate and a GHc50 appreciation gift.
